 SEA FEVER I. II and III by Tracy Barritt-Brown ASEA

The three Sea Fever paintings were inspired by the famous poem of that title written by poet laureate John Masefield (1878- 1967) which is printed below:-

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to sail her by,

And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,

And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life.

To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Each verse is thought to be a reference to various life stages.

The first verse, the breaking dawn, representing youth and the hope of the years to come, is depicted by a tall ship sailing past Herm and the Brehon Tower into St Peter Port harbour. The second verse refers to the turbulent passage through life and shows a tall ship battling out past the harbour lights putting to sea on a stormy day. The third verse takes us through later years and to the end of earthly being following the ship as it sails out past Pleinmont Point into the sunset and the Atlantic beyond . It also reminds us of the idea that life continues after death as the ship passes from view for those left on the shore and emerges over a different horizon.
